‘He’ll be like Saul’: Some Chelsea fans worried by transfer links to 26-year-old Champions League player

Chelsea are reportedly interested in trying to sign Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot – and some Blues fans on Twitter have responded by urging the club to reconsider any move for him.

Calciomercato reports that Chelsea and Newcastle United are keen on the 26-year-old ahead of the January transfer window.

The report suggests that Rabiot could replace Chelsea midfielder Saul Niguez at Stamford Bridge, who’s had a tough time so far this season since joining on loan from Atletico Madrid. Therefore, Saul’s season-long loan could be cut early in the New Year to make room for a new addition.

Chelsea fans worried by Rabiot interest

A selection of Blues supporters on social media feel that transfer target Rabiot could struggle in England in a similar fashion to Saul.

Saul, 26, has flattered to deceive during his opening few months in London. It’s been a slow start for the central midfielder in his first taste of Premier League football, something which is not unusual for individuals adapting from foreign leagues.

Rabiot has a lot of similar attributes to Saul. For instance, both are highly rated left-footed central midfielders that are proven in Europe.

Chelsea have already come up against Juventus star Rabiot this campaign in the Champions League group stages and will get another look at him up close when the clubs play again later in November.

The France international is strong in the air, along with being a great dribbler and disciplined in the centre of the park.

However, some Chelsea fans believe he would fall into the same trap as Saul of not playing regularly if he ended up joining. They are massively doubting if the club need to target any extra midfield signings, too.

It’s a tall order breaking into Thomas Tuchel’s XI as a midfielder when you consider current options include the likes of N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho.

Here are some Chelsea fans discussing the Rabiot speculation:

Midfield door shut for now

For central midfielders, Chelsea are not the club you want to join in search of regular minutes.

Blues star Kante, who Real Madrid’s Casemiro was previously raving about, would make any world XI when he’s in the mood. Meanwhile, Pat Nevin was recently signing the praises of Italian maestro Jorginho.

Chelsea supporters are spot on that targeting Rabiot makes little sense.
