Mauricio Pochettino has claimed his club Paris Saint-Germain have invested far less than Chelsea – and some Blues fans can’t believe what they’re hearing from him.
PSG boss Pochettino, who is well known from his time as Spurs manager, has been speaking about Chelsea.
He’s picked out Thomas Tuchel’s side as the team to beat in the Champions League this season, which is fair enough given they are the defending champions.
In addition, he’s made an intriguing claim when comparing the finances of PSG and Chelsea.
“I would say Chelsea are the team to beat. They reinforced their team, have signed players and I would say, they have invested financially a lot more than Paris Saint-Germain,” Pochettino said.
You have to go back to 2003 when Roman Abramovich took charge at Chelsea to see when the London club’s financial world got turned upside down. Meanwhile, Qatar Sports Investments have been in the French capital with PSG since 2011.
They are two superpowers across Europe in terms of spending, but a few select teams can match them.
Pochettino may be right when it comes to spending this summer on transfer fees as Chelsea splashed out on centre-forward Romelu Lukaku. In contrast, a lot of PSG’s business was done through smart deals in the window. But, it must be a different issue altogether when it comes to wages and overall cost.
Lionel Messi, Georginio Wijnaldum, Sergio Ramos and Gianluigi Donnarumma all joined PSG this summer on free transfers. Also, Achraf Hakimi, Danilo Pereira and Nuno Mendes were all signed, too. It doesn’t take a genius to work out they’ll be paying some mega money.
A selection of Chelsea fans on social media are not buying into Pochettino’s comments in the slightest:
