‘Shocked’, ‘Worrying signs’: Some Chelsea fans can’t believe £150k-a-week player is on bench v Newcastle

Cesar Azpilicueta has been named on the bench for today’s Premier League fixture against Newcastle United – and some Chelsea fans on Twitter are shocked at the decision.

The Blues travel to St James’ Park this afternoon to face Newcastle, as they look to remain at the top of the league table.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are starting to build up real momentum and are doing so amid plenty of injury problems at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea fans can’t believe Azpilicueta decision against Newcastle

Club captain Azpilicueta, 32, was left on the bench in last weekend’s 7-0 victory over Norwich City.

The £150,000-a-week Spanish defender is available today after missing the midweek Carabao Cup match against Southampton, but Blues manager Tuchel has decided once again to put him on the bench against Newcastle.

His versatility means he can play at either centre-half or right wing-back. However, Reece James and Andreas Christensen are the Chelsea teammates to start ahead of him this weekend in his favoured roles.

A selection of Blues supporters on social media are worried about the Spaniard’s lack of minutes in recent games. However, it’s worth noting that Tuchel has a habit of rotating players frequently.

Here are some Chelsea fans discussing Azpilicueta:

What’s Magpies form like?

Of course, Newcastle have been under the spotlight this season because of their new takeover. Also, the recent sacking of manager Steve Bruce has left Graeme Jones as interim boss.

It’s a pretty damning statistic that the Toon are yet to win any of their opening nine league games.

They’ve managed draws against Crystal Palace, Watford and Leeds United in three of their previous five matches.

Newcastle’s biggest problem this campaign has definitely been in defence, conceding 20 league goals already. This should be music to the ears of Chelsea attackers.
