'Special': Some Chelsea fans wowed by PSG player's Champions League display last night

Paris Saint-Germain edged past Real Madrid last night with a 1-0 win in the Champions League – and some Chelsea fans on Twitter were left in awe of the performance from PSG star Marco Verratti.

PSG secured a 1-0 home victory in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie, so it’s still nicely poised ahead of the second leg at the Bernabeu in early March.

French superstar Kylian Mbappe stole the headlines with his brilliant stoppage time goal. Also, Lionel Messi had missed a penalty for the hosts earlier in the second half.

It was midfield maestro Verratti that was so impressive in the centre of the park, though.

The 29-year-old pulled the strings all night against a high quality opposition, proving he’s currently one of the very best midfielders in the business.

Chelsea fans wowed

A selection of Blues supporters on social media were raving about Verratti’s individual display on Tuesday night.

In fairness, the Chelsea fanbase get to watch elite central midfielders on a regular basis with their players N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho.

However, plenty were amazed by a Champions League masterclass from Verratti this week.

The PSG ace, who actually plays alongside Jorginho on the international stage for Italy, stood out in the contest against Madrid.

He showed he’s an expert at keeping the ball in tight spaces and picking some great inventive passes, as well being so difficult to pin down in that midfield.

The ball-player has had some bad luck with injuries, but his club side have a chance of going deep into the European competition if he stays fit and healthy.

Interestingly, Chelsea were linked with Verratti back in May 2021. Blues boss Thomas Tuchel worked with him during his time as the manager in Paris, but nothing ever came of last year’s speculation.

Here are some Chelsea fans discussing Verratti’s midweek European performance:

Blues in CL action next week

It’s Chelsea’s turn in the Champions League knockouts when they host Lille at Stamford Bridge next Tuesday.

The Blues are bidding to defend their European crown, which in itself is an extremely tall order.

They’ve watched PSG impress during a win against Madrid last night. Meanwhile, Manchester City thrashed Sporting Lisbon 5-0 away from home yesterday to send out their own signal of intent in this season’s Champions League tournament.

A two-legged tie against Lille for a spot in the Champions League quarter-finals looks a decent draw on paper, but the Ligue 1 side are not to be underestimated.
