A healthy serving of Chelsea supporters on social media feasted upon Ross Barkley’s latest Instagram upload.

Barkley shared an image onto his story of himself on a treadmill with the incline and speed measurements cranked all the way up.

Although this period is called an international ‘break’, players cannot allow themselves to relax.

If anything, those who have remained at Cobham should be pushing themselves harder.

It’s a free chance to show Thomas Tuchel what they can do, without the competition of the regulars to worry about.

After successive substitute appearances, Barkley has even more reason to increase the pace of his running machine.

Blues fans appreciated the midfielder’s efforts, hoping he will be able to translate this running into real game practices.

Here’s how they reacted on Twitter:

Ross’ resurgence

Of course, Barkley must do much more than simply sprint faster or run further than any of his teammates.

But it won’t hurt to be slightly fitter when the weary travellers return from their duties abroad.

If Chelsea are pushing for a winner late in a game, they want the freshest legs available.

Tuchel has already shown he trusts the former Everton prodigy in such scenarios.

Barkley for the big occasions

The 27-year-old’s inclusion away to Juventus in the Champions League was surprising, to say the least.

Not only because Barkley had only played once all season prior to the match, but he came on ahead of Timo Werner, the more obvious choice to grab a goal.

Juve’s low block meant Werner would have been futile.

Instead, Tuchel needed confident passers and those willing to carry the ball in tight spaces.

That is why Barkley got the nod, as he did in the subsequent Premier League fixture at home to Southampton.

It was his delightfully weighted drive out to Cesar Azpilicueta that instigated Chelsea’s second of the afternoon.

Can the Liverpudlian make it three appearances in a row when the Blues face Brentford after the international interlude?

He could probably run straight from Stamford Bridge to the Bees’ hive at this rate.
