'Why?', 'Shouldn't be starting': Some Chelsea fans worried as £40m player is named in XI vs Brentford
Chelsea have announced their starting line-up for tonight’s game against Brentford – and some Blues fans on Twitter are a little worried to see Mateo Kovacic in the XI.
Thomas Tuchel has picked an interesting side on Wednesday night for the Carabao Cup quarter-final tie away to Brentford.
There are eight changes to the team that drew 0-0 against Wolverhampton Wanderers on the weekend in the Premier League. Trevoh Chalobah, Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso are the only survivors in the XI.
Jude Sunsoop-Bell, Harvey Vale and Xavier Simmons are three academy players introduced to the team to make their first-team debuts. Hopefully, they can follow in the footsteps of recent academy graduates to make the grade at Stamford Bridge.
The likes of Mason Mount and Reece James are the benchmark in the past few years that aspiring academy players should aim to reach.
Chelsea fans fearful on Kovacic
A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media believe Tuchel may be taking a serious risk on Kovacic.
The 27-year-old did come off the bench against Wolves on Sunday, but he was out since October before then due to injury and illness.
The bench tonight is stacked with plenty of senior figures, but Croatian midfielder Kovacic is someone that the inexperienced youngsters will need to lean on.
He needs to get minutes in his legs, so perhaps playing for the opening hour is the smart move with him.
