'It depends': Thomas Tuchel suggests Chelsea player may not be fit enough to play for 90 minutes

Thomas Tuchel has suggested in his midweek press conference that Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku may not be fit enough for a full 90 minutes yet.

The Blues are currently preparing for Thursday night’s match at home to Everton in the Premier League.

Lukaku, 28, will surely be desperate to play against one of his former clubs. Incidentally, some Chelsea fans have claimed in the build-up they want the striker in the starting line-up tomorrow.

The Belgian centre-forward has had to be patient since returning from an injury during the past month. He’s made five appearances in total since his comeback, but is yet to get through a full allocation of 90 minutes.

Tuchel has suggested ahead of this week’s league game against Everton that Lukaku is still not at full fitness:

“We let him play 70 something minutes against Zenit. Then we had a lot of travelling and lack of sleep and a very intensive opponent with Leeds so we decided not put him in this straight away. I think he can play 70-plus but it depends on how the game goes,” Tuchel said.

Chelsea star needs more minutes in legs

If Lukaku is to return to scoring goals at a rapid rate again, Tuchel needs to be bolder and give him more minutes.

He was given the briefest of cameo appearances from the bench in the recent win over Leeds United, so surely he’s one of the fresher options to come into the starting XI against Everton.

Chelsea paid a fortune to bring him to Stamford Bridge and tomorrow’s the kind of game they signed him for to find breakthroughs against mid-table opponents.

He’s got five goals in all competitions so far this season, but the expectation from most is that he’ll annihilate double figures to reach the 20-goal mark.
