20-year-old Chelsea prospect nominated to be his country's player of the year
Chelsea’s Billy Gilmour has been nominated to be Scotland’s player of the year.
The 20-year-old Blues prospect, who’s spending this season out on loan with Norwich City, is an important player on the international stage.
He’s been included on a five-man shortlist for Scotland’s best men’s international player.
Gilmour is joined by Aston Villa’s John McGinn, Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney, Hearts’s Craig Gordon and QPR’s Lyndon Dykes.
Gilmour’s now earned 12 senior caps for Scotland and is a key starter in Steve Clarke’s line-up.
The central midfielder hasn’t quite been able to cement a spot in the best XI during this campaign’s loan with Norwich but he seems to thrive off the responsibility of putting on the Scotland jersey.
He’ll be hoping to get the Scots over the line in their bid for World Cup qualification. They’ll need to beat Ukraine followed by Wales to secure a spot in Qatar, though.
The Chelsea-owned youngster was impressing again during the most recent international break, earning an 8/10 match rating for his individual display against Poland last week.
Big Chelsea decision in summer
Obviously, this season’s loan with Norwich hasn’t gone quite to planned.
It’s been a minor backwards step in his development, so the Blues need to assess where he’s at in the summer.
The Scottish talent may need another loan in the Premier League before stepping into Thomas Tuchel’s plans on a regular basis, but he’d need the right destination this time around.
