Ciro Immobile starred on Friday night for Italy in the first game of Euro 2020 – and some Chelsea fans on Twitter were left raving about his individual performance.
Italy kickstarted the Euros with a comprehensive 3-0 victory against Turkey, and that’s why many are now tipping them as a team that could go deep into the competition this summer.
It’s only one game, but a draw between Wales and Switzerland on Saturday leaves them top of Group A in a favourable position to reach the knockout stages.
Lazio frontman Immobile was the star of the show for the Italians.
Firstly, he got himself on the scoresheet in the 66th minute by showing a striker’s instinct to pounce in the penalty area by scoring an easy goal. Afterwards, he provided the assist for teammate Lorezno Insigne, plus he was an attacking menace during the game with his runs in the final third.
The centre-forward is a key player for the national team, so a lot of their hopes rest on him this tournament.
Immobile the real deal
As well as his international heroics, Immobile is a talisman for his club side Lazio.
The rapid striker scored 25 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions for the Serie A club this season. Additionally, he weighed in with eights assists.
He’s someone that isn’t the biggest in stature, but he uses his brilliant pace, agility and movement to make the difference on the big stage.
It’s extremely difficult for opponents to handle him with his intelligent runs around the box, something he’s learned to master over the years.
The 31-year-old now looks in the prime of his career.
His Lazio record is staggering. He has 150 goals in 219 appearances for the Italians since he joined them back in 2016.
Chelsea fans loved Immobile display on Friday
For Chelsea, they really should be signing a new centre-forward this summer.
It seems a strange claim to make after winning the Champions League, But, Thomas Tuchel’s Blues squad needs a prolific goalscorer if they are to challenge across the board for trophies next year. There is a real opportunity for there to be a massive period of domesitc success again at Stamford Bridge with one or two more additions.
One supporter made a comparison between Immobile and current Chelsea attacker Timo Werner, who had his fair share of criticism this season for his struggles in front of goal.
There are similarities in their movement on the pitch, but Immobile has shown him the way in terms of finishing during the past 12 months.
Additionally, one fan said Chelsea should abandon interest in Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland to target Lazio’s talisman.
There are no links between the Blues and Immobile, who is still under contract with Lazio until 2025. However, the eyes of the footballing world are going to see just how much quality he’s got as the Euros progresses. He’s definitely someone to watch out for.
