Gareth Southgate said Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell picked up a lower back injury as he fears pressure from clubs over injury concerns.
The Three Lions suffered a 2-0 defeat against Belgium on Sunday and Chilwell had to be taken off just 38 minutes into the game.
The injury news will leave Chelsea manager Frank Lampard sweating, given the left-back’s crucial role for the Blues this season.
Having missed a few games at the start of the campaign due to a heel injury, Chilwell started in Chelsea’s last eight matches in all competitions.
According to England boss Southgate, the severity of the injury remains unclear.
“We will have to assess him,” the manager told reporters after the game (via the Times).
“Ben had some sort of issue with his back which he was complaining about and didn’t feel he could carry on.”
While it could be a minor injury, and the left-back may recover in time for England’s game against Iceland on Wednesday, Southgate also admitted there could be some reactions from clubs which could lead to some players withdrawing from the squad.
“We will find out a lot now because, for sure, there will be pressure from some clubs on their own players,” he added.
“That is what we live with constantly, but we have players who want to play for England and we have pride in the way we play and we want to finish well.”
Chilwell, Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham are the three Chelsea players who are currently still in the England squad after Reece James, who featured in the 3-0 friendly win over Ireland last week, returned early due to his Nations League suspension.
