Germany boss Flick defends Chelsea star despite latest disappointing display

Germany boss Hansi Flick refused to solely criticise Chelsea star Timo Werner’s underwhelming performance in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Hungary.

The result means Germany failed to win any of their first three UEFA Nations League with three draws against Italy, England, and Hungary.

It looked promising early in the game after Jonas Hofmann scored an equaliser after Hungary’s early goal through Zolt Nagy.

The three starting forwards; Werner, Kai Havertz, and Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala unsurprisingly had to deal with scrutiny after failing to register any shot on target.

Werner, who played as a number nine, in particular, had just 21 touches in the 78 minutes he played.

“The whole team has lacked conviction, the former Bayern Munich manager said after the game (via DFB’s official website) when asked about Werner’s performance.

“He [Werner] puts in a great effort. He puts the opponent under pressure and offers himself again and again.

“But we have too few chances, the right finishes are not to be seen.

“That is our issue, we have to work on that. We are in a development process.”

The former RB Leipzig ace’s poor form is a big concern for both Germany and Chelsea.

Werner last scored back in Chelsea’s defeat to Arsenal back in April and scored just 17 goals in 52 appearances for both the club and Germany this term.

Even if Chelsea were planning to offload the striker, as recent reports suggested, it is unlikely that they would be able to recoup the £45million (Sky Sports) they spent on him in 2020 given his form.
