Jamie Carragher has claimed he would select Mason Mount to start tonight for England against Germany.

England face rivals Germany at Wembley Stadium for a place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2020.

Mount, along with Chelsea teammate Ben Chilwell, will be back with the Three Lions squad available to for selection after a period of self-isolation.

However, reports suggest he could miss out on the starting XI.

The Athletic claims that Arsenal youngster Bukayo Saka will continue in the starting XI, so there may not be place in the side for either Mount, Phil Foden or Jack Grealish due to a switch in formation.

Pundit and ex-England international Carragher believes that Mount will be needed against the Germans though.

“The dilemma for Southgate is choosing between Grealish or Mason Mount. I would go with Mount. He is technically good on the ball, and just as importantly, his pressing is as good as anyone in the squad. That is so important in this match, especially as England may have to do plenty of chasing during certain periods,” Carragher wrote for The Telegraph

Mount omission a poor one

It’s all a game of opinions, so Southgate is either going to be a hero or villain after today’s game.

He’s the one ultimately working with the England players each day, so fans have to trust him.

If there is concern that Mount may not be able to slot into the XI effortlessly because of his period of self-isolation, then that’s fair enough.

But, dropping the 22-year-old attacking midfielder seems odd.

He’s got the exact skillset needed just like Carragher states and has shown repeatedly what he can do in elite fixtures.

Southgate will have full support during the match, but it looks like a brave decision to leave out all of England’s creative sparks.
