‘On fire’: Chelsea fans amazed by their 31-year-old’s display for his country
Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta played his first minutes of Euro 2020 yesterday for Spain – and some Blues fans on Twitter were left raving about his performance.
Spain, who had drawn their first two games, turned on the style to thrash Slovakia 5-0 in the final group match.
They will face Croatia next in the Round of 16.
It’s been a slow start to this summer’s Euros for giants Spain, but they put down a marker on Wednesday with their result.
Chelsea defender Azpilicueta had to watch from the sidelines his nation’s opening two matches. However, he was promoted to the starting XI against Slovakia.
The Champions League-winning skipper impressed at right-back for the Spaniards, as he added some extra experience and calmness for his country.
Chelsea ace Azpilicueta is still underrated after all this time
Remarkably, Azpilicueta still hasn’t managed to shake this underrated tag.
The 31-year-old has been performing to such a high standard since his transfer to Stamford Bridge in 2012, so it’s bizarre he’s still overlooked.
He’s someone that will deliver at least a 7/10 performance every game, which is why it’s brilliant for Spain to have him to call upon.
The full-back, who also plays centre-back in a back three, is playing with such confidence right now after lifting the Champions League.
A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media praised “Azpi” for his international display, claiming he was robbed of assists.
