Chelsea supporters on social media couldn’t understand why Jorginho was not taken off early during Italy’s easy win over Lithuania yesterday.
Jorginho played just over an hour last night, having already lasted the full 90 minutes in both of his nation’s previous World Cup qualifying fixtures.
By the time the midfielder had left the field, Italy were 5-0 up and in complete cruise control.
It was a momentous occasion for the 29-year-old, who captained his country for the very first time.
But Blues had hoped his crowning ceremony would finish early.
They saw no reason for Jorginho to take on any extra burden, considering Chelsea face Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to the overdue substitution of the Azzurri skipper:
No rest for the wicked
Of course, Chelsea followers were over the moon for Jorginho to be handed the armband.
After all, he became the first non-native Italian to lead the team out since 1960.
Yet, for purely selfish reasons, they wanted him squeaky clean for the return of domestic football.
After four hours of action, tailed with constant movement across the continent, Jorginho will have undoubtedly lost some of his shine.
And Thomas Tuchel can’t really afford to lose any more of his key sailors overboard.
He is already without Thiago Silva and Reece James for the weekend’s home game against Villa.
N’Golo Kante and Christian Pulisic are set to miss out through injury.
An update on Romelu Lukaku’s fitness is yet to be revealed.
Plus, the likes of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Cesar Azpilicueta, Mateo Kovacic and Timo Werner featured in all three of their respective nation’s matches.
As they say on the motorway: tiredness kills.
Although not to that extreme, Tuchel might have to rethink his strategy to face Villa due to a weary set of returning internationals.
