‘The amount of runs’: Manager says 21-year-old on Chelsea’s books is similar to Frank Lampard
England’s Under-21s manager Lee Carsley has made a comparison between Chelsea prospect Conor Gallagher and ex-Premier League star Frank Lampard.
Gallagher, 21, is currently away with the Young Lions during the international break. It won’t be a surprise to see him play on Thursday night for England’s Under-21s against Czech Republic.
The box-to-box midfielder has been loaned out this season by Chelsea to Crystal Palace, something which is turning out to be an excellent decision.
He’s thriving in the Premier League with a Palace team playing some eye-catching football under Patrick Vieira.
Gallagher’s already making a name for himself with late runs from the edge of the box, something that Chelsea legend Lampard was renowned for in his player career.
Carsley is extremely impressed by the Chelsea-owned talent and has given him a compliment he’ll surely love.
“One of Conor’s biggest strengths, but I don’t want people to get carried away with it, is his ability to arrive in the box is like Frank Lampard. Not just because of the timing but it is about the amount of runs that he makes,” Carsley said.
“It is the same with Tim Cahill [who Carsley played with at Everton], he just had a knack of arriving into the box at the right time but it is due to the amount of runs he makes rather than being at the right place at the right time.
“He scores a lot of goals in small sided games which is again a good sign because he has some really good finishing technique, he is calm in front of goal and can score an array of goals. I like the scruffy ones that he scores that bounce into the ground and into the corners.”
Gallagher making Chelsea take note
Chelsea’s loan army of players will all be wanting to grab the attention of the Blues hierarchy, as there is a genuine path into the first team at Stamford Bridge if you’re good enough.
Gallagher is ticking all the right boxes by performing in the Premier League.
Goals from midfield
Lampard was the master of scoring goals from midfield.
If any current midfielders want tips on goalscoring, they should look back at clips of Lampard from his playing days.
Gallagher certainly doesn’t need extra pressure on his shoulders, but you can see why a comparison is made to a footballing great with the way he’s been scoring this season.
Gallagher is another gem to come through the academy at Chelsea and the goalscoring midfielder is taking the next step this year out on loan with Palace.
