Chelsea took the decision yesterday to recall Jamie Cumming from his loan at Gillingham – and some of their fans on Twitter were left absolutely gutted they are losing him.
Cumming, 22, has spent the first half of the season impressing for a Gillingham side that are battling against relegation in League One. He was certainly turning into a big fan favourite around Priestfield Stadium, too.
However, Chelsea recalled him yesterday before immediately sending him out on loan again to League One rivals MK Dons for the rest of the 2021/22 season. The shot-stopper has gone from fighting relegation with 23rd-placed Gillingham to fifth-placed MK Dons that are in the hunt for promotion.
Chelsea have decided to interrupt his loan midway through the season by giving him a new challenge.
Gillingham reaction says it all
A selection of Gillingham supporters on social media are upset about Cumming’s exit and are worried their relegation fears will become a reality after losing one of their top players.
He’s yet to make his Chelsea first-team debut, but has now had 18 positive months away from Stamford Bridge on loan.
His time at Stevenage last year has been followed by six promising months at Gillingham, so his task now is to prove himself with MK Dons.
Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga are Chelsea’s main two goalkeepers in Thomas Tuchel’s current squad, but how long will the latter be happy with playing second fiddle?
If Cumming continues developing like he is, it’ll be interesting to see if he can break into Tuchel’s plans.
