Chelsea vs Manchester United: Match Preview

Chelsea return to Premier League action this weekend, with Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United the visitors to Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The Blues continued their winning ways in the Premier League last weekend with a 1-0 win away to Bournemouth. Eden Hazard scored the only goal of the game as Antonio Conte’s side claimed all three points on the South Coast.

However, Chelsea couldn’t continue their run with a win in the Champions League on Tuesday. A poor performance saw the side lose 3-0 away to AS Roma. The Blues never looked like threatening in the game, and the Italian side ran riot.

Manchester United were also 1-0 winners against Tottenham last weekend in the league. Anthony Martial scored to give United a valuable three points as they remain five points behind their city rivals.

Like Chelsea, United were also in Champions League action during the week. They were 2-0 winners against Benfica to make it four wins out of four in the competition so far. An own goal and a Daley Blind penalty was enough to beat the Portuguese side.

After missing Tuesday’s defeat to Roma, N’Golo Kante could make his long-awaited return from a hamstring injury. The Frenchman will be assessed late on to ensure he is capable of playing. Victor Moses remains out with a hamstring injury.

Conte has a few decisions to make defensively too. The back three of Gary Cahill, David Luiz, and Antonio Rudiger struggled in Rome, so a switch could be made to combat the attacking threat of Manchester United.

For United, a number of key players remain out. Paul Pogba, Michael Carrick, and Marouane Fellaini are all injured, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic remains sidelined. Saturday’s match-winner Martial could be pushing for a start, after coming off the bench to net United’s only goal.

Last season, Chelsea won both games against United at Stamford Bridge. A 4-0 win was followed by a narrow 1-0 win in the FA Cup. The Blues will hope to continue this short run of wins.

It won’t be easy, however, as United have looked great defensively and have only lost one game this season, which was a surprise 2-0 defeat away to Huddersfield.
