Paul Merson is predicting that Chelsea forward Timo Werner is going to start tomorrow against Brentford.

Premier League leaders Chelsea are back in action on Saturday evening with a trip to London rivals Brentford, who have made an impressive return to the top flight so far this season.

Blues manager Thomas Tuchel knows that he’s traveling with a somewhat depleted squad this weekend. Chelsea trio Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger and Christian Pulisic are unavailable. Also, Hakim Ziyech is doubtful.

Tuchel confirmed that Romelu Lukaku is fit enough to start after his international injury scare.

Merson thinks that Werner is going to join Lukaku in the starting attack, too:

“I think Timo Werner will start alongside Romelu Lukaku for this one. Brentford play three at the back, so there will be a lot of space down the channels for runners to exploit. Werner has the pace to do exactly that and is coming on the back of a good outing for Germany, so he could get the nod for this one,” Merson said.

Werner should start v Brentford

If you take a look at Chelsea’s win over Southampton before the internatonal break, you’ll see Werner was one of the most important figures on the pitch.

The 25-year-old got on the scoresheet after disallowed goals and was a constant threat with his movement for 90 minutes.

Frank Leboeuf claimed last month Werner has a role to play in this Chelsea squad, something he should be allowed to prove right now.

He’s a speedster that could cause havoc against Brentford’s back-three due to the face in-between centre-back.

Tuchel has options in the final third, but Werner needs a run of starts.
