Chelsea 3-0 Aston Villa: Match Reaction
Chelsea maintained their unbeaten record of the season as they cruise to victory against Aston Villa.
The Blues, one changed from the side that drew against Manchester City in their last Premier league outing, started brightly and were rewarded with a goal inside seven minutes.
Willian’s first bite at the cherry was saved by Guzan but the ball went straight back to the Brazilian, who decided to lay it off to his compatriot at the second time of asking. Oscar swept it home.
It was not all plain sailing thereafter, however. Cissokho came close for the visitors and Courtois was fortunate to see it go past his right-hand post.
It took a long time for the second goal of the game but when it came in the 59th minute, it was surely game over. Costa continued his fine form with a fantastic header to double his side’s advantage. The Spaniard leapt ahead of Nathan Baker to score his eighth goal in six matches.
It could have been three just four minutes later if Oscar’s poke had been less delicate and more forceful, but Cissokho recovered.
The Aston Villa defence could do nothing to prevent an eventual third goal, however. Costa drifted in from the left-wing and Willian was the beneficiary when Costa’s strike bounced off Guzan’s body.
Man of the Match
WILLIAN: The Brazilian was influential in that he provided the assist for the first Chelsea goal and then rounded off the scoring with a goal for himself. A very assured display and though Costa matched Willian’s feats, it needed Willian to create the opportunities from midfield, especially as Hazard was below-par. 8/10
Mourinho was elated with the all-round performance: “It was very good from the beginning. Even during the period the game was 1-0, when it could be open, it was always closed because we controlled the game. My four defenders and two midfield players were very solid. The result was a consequence of our dominance.”
Lambert was proud of his players: “I thought we gave a really good account of ourselves. We were really solid. I can’t fault the lads. When you do get a chance at a place like this you have to score. Maybe 3-0 was a little harsh on us.”
