Maurizio Sarri’s ideas are similar to Pep Guardiola’s but Sunday’s Community Shield largely served to show just how much further down the line in terms of confidence and fluency Manchester City are than Chelsea.

The comfortable 2-0 win for the Premier League winners, sealed by a goal in each half from Sergio Aguero, was an ominous warning sign as the impact of the Blues’ slightly rushed pre-season was laid bare by a ruthless City side.

However, there were signs of promise. Some of Sarri’s ideas are clearly getting through and Callum Hudson-Odoi produced a performance of endeavour and fearlessness to inject some pace in the absence of Eden Hazard.
