Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has claimed he thought Romelu Lukaku looked “a bit tired” during Saturday’s Premier League win over Brentford.

Chelsea were nowhere near their fluent best at the weekend, but they still managed to gain the important three points to regain the lead at the top of the league table.

Ben Chilwell’s superb half-volley on the stroke of half time turned out to be the winner.

In fairness, hosts Brentford were extremely unfortunate not to grab something from the game given they were a constant attacking threat for the final 25 minutes of the contest. Fortunately, Blues goalkeeper Edouard Mendy delivered one of his most heroics performances to date. Some Chelsea fans were stunned by the quality of his display.

Lukaku, 28, started during the Brentford win as part of a two-man attack alongside Timo Werner.

The left-footed centre-forward missed the last of Belgium’s international games during the recent break, but was passed fit enough to start today.

Unfortunately, the Belgian frontman couldn’t get much change out of the Brentford backline. Tuchel has given an honest assessment with his post-match comments:

“I felt him (Lukaku) a bit tired today. Altogether we did a very strong 60 to 75 minutes, including Romelu and Timo [Werner]. I am not concerned as I felt him a bit tired and then isolated because we were defending as a block too deep,” Tuchel said.

Tuchel still searching to get best from Lukaku

Four goals in 10 appearances this season for Lukaku is perhaps below par for the Chelsea forward. It’s certainly not time to panic, though.

He was substituted off during the second half against Brentford and you have to wonder whether he was 100 per cent fit after recently missing a Belgium game.

It’s interesting to see the partnership develop with Werner because the German seems to benefit playing with him.

However, Lukaku is still trying to find his prolific form.

Title whispers grow louders

Chelsea have only played eight games this season, so people need to keep a lid on title talk. Also, rivals Manchester City and Liverpool are looking very strong right now.

However, today’s performance was the stuff of serious title contenders.

Chelsea, who were without key defenders, carved out three points when they were being bombarded with constant Brentford attacks late on.

A lot of teams will struggle going to Brentford this campaign.
