Czech Republic beat Scotland yesterday at the Euro 2020 competition – and some Chelsea fans on Twitter responded to claim they’d love to sign goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik.
Vaclik starred for Czech Republic on Monday during a 2-0 win over Scotland in their opening group stage match.
The Czechs walked away with three points and now turn their attention to Croatia. Meanwhile, Scotland face great rivals England at Wembley Stadium.
Vaclik received an impressive 7.73 rating by WhoScored for his Euro performance on Monday.
The 32-year-old goalkeeper was a constant thorn in the side of his opponents Scotland, as he made several top saves to deny them getting on the scoresheet. For example, he kept out a piledriver from Liverpool’s Andy Robertson that was destined for the goal.
Intriguingly, he’s available on a free transfer this summer.
The Czech shot-stopper is departing Spanish La Liga club Sevilla following the expiration of his contract at the end of June, so clubs will be able to snap him up as a free agent.
He played just eight games across all competitions during the 2020/21 season for Sevilla, but he’s certainly done his reputation no harm during the opening week of the Euros.
Chelsea fans suggest Vaclik
A selection of Chelsea supporters on social media were stunned by the quality of Vaclik in the Czech Republic win.
It’ll be the case throughout the Euros that one good performances receives plenty of attention, but it’s a real statement for someone who’s out of contract this summer to deliver such a display.
He’s got plenty of experience, including 58 clean sheets in 169 appearances for Swiss club FC Basel earlier in his career. Additionally, he has 34 clean sheets in 94 matches for Sevilla.
The 6ft 2in goalkeeper has never played for an English club before in his career, but many neutral fans were left mightily impressed by heroics against Scotland.
Edouard Mendy isn’t being replaced soon
Despite suggestions from Chelsea fans to look at Vaclik, most will agree it would be a signing to provide cover for number one Blues goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
Mendy, 29, had a stunning debut season at Stamford Bridge that saw him keep a staggering 25 clean sheets in 44 appearances. In addition, his Champions League record was breathtaking.
The Senegal international kept nine clean sheets in Chelsea’s 12 Champions League games as they won Europe’s elite club competition. His impact in west London was completely unexpected, and he turned out to be a genius £22million signing from Rennes.
It’s very much a case of suggesting Vaclik to relieve Kepa Arrizabalaga of the role as second-choice goalkeeper.
One Chelsea fan reckons Blues sporting director Petr Cech, who happens to be a footballing icon in Czech Republic from his playing career, should try to tempt fellow countryman Vaclik to Stamford Bridge.
It’s going to be interesting to see where he’s playing his football next season, especially if he has a strong rest of the tournament. Perhaps seeing how he gets on against England later this month could help attract some Premier League eyes.
