Fabio Capello says he has been impressed by Chelsea player at Euro 2020

Fabio Capello has credited Chelsea star Jorginho for Italy’s incredible defensive record in the Euro 2020, describing him as Azzurri’s “main man”.

Italy boss Roberto Mancini has plenty of top midfield options at his disposal, such as Marco Verratti, Manuel Locatelli, and Nicolo Barella.

However, Jorginho seems to be his preferred option for the holding midfield role — and it is easy to see why.

Despite his lack of physical presence in midfield, Jorginho has been key to their defence.

Capello, who initially doubted Jorginho’s defensive ability, has now admitted that he has been impressed by the midfielder.

“Jorginho, he’s Mancini’s main man,” the former England boss told Corriere dello Sport.

“He was a player who didn’t convince me completely.

“But in the matches I saw him live, I watched him carefully, and he is a midfielder who knows how to stay on the field and direct the team.

“The fact that Italy didn’t concede many goals is due to his ability to intervene at the right time in the actions of the opponents.”

It is quite obvious that Jorginho has improved a lot defensively compared to his Napoli days.

Under Maurizio Sarri, he was a text-book regista — a deep-lying playmaker who, at times, would struggle when out of possession.

But under Frank Lampard and particularly Thomas Tuchel, Jorginho has been given more defensive responsibility and less offensively, with more creative players in front of him.

This might have really helped him improve his defensive game which has benefited Italy so far.
