Gary Neville expects Chelsea star to be benched again in final Euro 2020 group match

Gary Neville believes Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell will once again be left out from the England starting line-up for their final group match against Czech Republic on Tuesday.

The Euro 2020 has been rather disappointing for the 24-year-old.

While he managed to reclaim his starting spot under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea, it has not been the case so far with England.

In the opening win over Croatia, England boss Gareth Southgate surprisingly picked Kieran Trippier, who is naturally a right-back, over both Chilwell and Luke Shaw on the left.

While in the following draw with Scotland, it was Shaw who was given the nod to start.

Neville, however, believes Southgate will restore his initial full-back pairing for the decisive match against Czech Rep and expects Chilwell to miss out.

“I definitely think Walker will come back in [on the right], and it wouldn’t surprise me if Trippier came back in as well,” the former Manchester United defender told Sky Sports.

“What I don’t think we can see is [Ben] Chilwell coming in and having three different left-backs in the first three games.”

Reece James underwhelming vs Scotland, says Neville

Neville criticised James, as well as Shaw, for their passive displays against Scotland.

“They didn’t look like they could go forward at speed, like we’ve seen them all year,” he explained.

“If [England coaches] were giving them that instruction, they would have picked Trippier and Walker.

“You’re only picking James and Shaw to run forward quickly, put crosses in the box and join the attack.”

Neville is not the only pundit to have criticised James after making just one cross throughout the game as earlier Mourinho also expressed his disappointment over the “offensive” Chelsea talent.
