Some Chelsea fans are still reeling from Cole Palmer’s England World Cup snub after watching the warm-up match against New Zealand.

Thomas Tuchel’s decision to completely omit Cole Palmer from England’s World Cup squad remains a massive talking point, especially after the Three Lions’ highly uninspiring 1–0 victory over New Zealand.

The reasons behind his snub have never been fully disclosed; however, there have been clues that it was down to Palmer‘s personality and the battle for the number 10 position.

And having watched England’s warm-up clash with New Zealand, the overall attacking display was sluggish, rigid, and devoid of creativity through the middle.

But Jamie Carragher believes there’s more to it than meets the eye regarding Palmer’s exclusion.

Jamie Carragher points to Cole Palmer’s potential lack of harmony

Speaking in the Overlap Fan Debate ahead of the World Cup, Jamie Carragher was on the topic of why players like Phil Foden and Cole Palmer have been left out of the squad.

He reckons that Thomas Tuchel valued harmony over quality in that respect.

“There’s no when you’re talking about talent, I think he sees certain players, maybe Trent’s one of them, maybe Folden, Palmer.

“I don’t know the Harry Maguire one, but the fact he’s gone for Dan Burn, I think most people in this room would probably say you’d say Harry Maguire is probably a better player than Dan Burn, but I know he loves Dan Burn in and around the squad.

“This is bigger than just having a talented player. We can’t have anybody who brings the group down in any way or negativity, or they’re not happy, they’re not playing or they’re throwing their arms about. This is about we’re going to be a team.”

Has Cole Palmer been wronged? Or is it just deserved for his poor form?🤔

You can understand where Thomas Tuchel is coming from

You can certainly understand Thomas Tuchel’s rationale behind prioritising squad harmony and a zero-tolerance policy for big egos at the World Cup. International tournaments are gruelling, high-pressure pressure cookers where a cohesive, unified dressing room often triumphs over a disjointed one.

However, football matches at the highest level are ultimately decided by moments of individual magic.

You still need match-winners like Cole Palmer. Sacrificing a player possessing such a game-changing quality for players like Eberechi Eze, who lack experience, isn’t always the best option.
