'Proud of you': Ben Chilwell sends message to 22-year-old Rangers player after his Europa League final display

Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell sent a message on social media to Rangers star Calvin Bassey after yesterday’s Europa League final.

Rangers suffered defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in Wednesday’s Europa League showdown, with the two teams eventually separated on penalties. Chelsea are a team that can certainly sympathise with their Scottish counterparts after their recent record in penalty shootouts, losing twice to Liverpool in domestic cup finals this season.

Despite defeat in midweek, several Rangers stars impressed on the big stage in a European final.

In particular, 22-year-old defender Bassey was an absolute colossus at the back. He’s a left-back by trade with great pace and power, but was imperious in a centre-back role against Frankfurt.

Ben Chilwell messages Calvin Bassey

Chelsea full-back Chilwell messaged the Rangers defender on Instagram after the Europa League contest.

Bassey, who’s an ex-Leicester City academy player, was at the King Power Stadium at the same time Chilwell played for the Foxes.

They’re both left-backs to develop at Leicester before enjoying big success elsewhere.

A Chelsea fit?

Bassey’s dominant performance last night suggested he could be a great target for some Premier League clubs, but it would be too premature to chuck Chelsea’s name into the mix yet.

He’s a talented youngster that will now need to deal with the pressure of seeing everyone discuss him in the aftermath of last night’s eye-catching individual performance.

It won’t be a surprise to see the Nigeria international return to England, though.

Chelsea need to be in the market for a left-sided centre-half this summer due to Antonio Rudiger’s imminent exit. However, they desperately require a proven and experienced replacement in that position.
