Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel singled out Romelu Lukaku after his impressive performance at the weekend at Stamford Bridge.

Lukaku, 28, scored a brace for the Blues in their 3-0 home win over Aston Villa.

It was a contest where visitors Aston Villa had plenty of opportunities to find the back of the net, but inspired goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was not to be denied a clean sheet.

Meanwhile, Lukaku showed that he’s now bringing to Chelsea the kind of ruthlessness they’ve lacked in recent years.

The striker opened the scoring on his weaker right foot after showing great composure to create room for himself in the box. His second strike late on was a rocket that flew into the top of the net. Also, Mateo Kovacic scored in-between with a rare goal.

There were a few standout performances from the likes of Mendy, Kovacic and Thiago Silva on Saturday evening.

However, Blues manager Tuchel gifted huge credit to the role of double goalscorer Lukaku:

“It was very important he opened up the game for us with the first and scored a fantastic second one. He loves these kind of challenges. He was the key factor today,” Tuchel said.

Romelu Lukaku answer prayers of Chelsea fans

Of course, Chelsea have a brilliant squad of players that together won the Champions League crown last season.

But, the missing piece of the jigsaw has now been added to potentially make this a group that can challenge for a league title.

Lukaku’s weekend performance encapsulated why he’s now one of the best strikers in the world.

He didn’t get much service throughout a game where opponents Villa looked strong, but showed two breathtaking bits of quality to score a goal in each half.

Chelsea now have a central striker again they can love.
