Dujuan ‘Whisper’ Richards‘ agent Craig Butler has explained how Chelsea director Joe Shields convinced the young striker to choose Stamford Bridge ahead of other “top” options.

Richards has recently signed a pre-contract with Chelsea and the 17-year-old will join Chelsea when he turns 18.

The young striker, who registered 31 goals and 19 assists for his academy side, Jamaica-based Phoenix Allstar, had unsurprisingly generated a lot of interest before he eventually chose Chelsea.

According to his agent, the list includes Manchester City, whose interest played a part in Richards’ Chelsea path.

“We met with Ajax, Genk, Club Brugge, and he [Richards] went on a trial with Newcastle, killed it,” the player’s agent and academy owner Butler told SportsMax TV.

“With Chelsea, we had a relationship with Joe Shields from when he was at Manchester City and it introduced him to Whisper, two years ago.

“They [Man City] actually sent scouts here to look at him.

“Then he [Shields] made his move from Man City to Southampton then to Chelsea.

“Also [Chelsea scout] Tony White is Jamaican. He’s a chief scout for Chelsea in mainland Europe.

“So, I also met Tony and spoke about [Richards], and the next thing you know, we’ll have him in Chelsea colours.”

Richards has recently made his debut for Jamaica senior team in a friendly match against Trinidad and Tobago.
