Ben Chilwell offered a heartfelt six-word reaction on social media after Chelsea were cruelly knocked out of the Champions League on Tuesday night.
It was a magnificent performance from the Blues with a 3-2 win at the Bernabeu, but it wasn’t enough to overturn the 3-1 scoreline from the first leg.
As a result, Real Madrid are through to the semis to face either Manchester City or Atletico Madrid.
Injured Chelsea star Chilwell was incredibly proud of his teammates despite the overall result tonight:
Tale of dramatic night in Madrid
Chelsea, who trailed 3-1 on aggregate from the first leg, made the perfect start in tonight’s second leg.
Mason Mount put the visitors ahead in the 15th minute with a superb low finish that he powered past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Thomas Tuchel’s side then went 2-0 ahead, which made it 3-3 on aggregate, with Antonio Rudiger’s header early in the second half.
The huge decision from Chelsea boss Tuchel to start Timo Werner was vindicated when the German forward netted in the 75th minute, which put his side in front for the first time during the two legs.
Madrid equalised at 4-4 on aggregate with a strike from substitute Rodrygo in the 80th minute, though. He latched on to finish off a ridiculous lofted pass from Luka Modric with the outside of his boot.
After 180 minutes of action, it went all the way to extra time for another frantic 30 minutes.
Ultimately, Karim Benzema was the hero on the night by scoring a header in the first half of extra time. The French striker followed up his hat-trick in the first leg with the final goal of the contest to decide it.
It was a performance from the Chelsea side that every fan can be proud of. However, the defence of the European crown is now over after a 5-4 aggregate loss in a European classic.
