Chelsea star comments on Steven Gerrard's impact at Aston Villa
Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has described Aston Villa as a “team that is difficult to beat” under new manager Steven Gerrard.
The Liverpool icon took over from Dean Smith in mid-November and has helped Villa climb from 16th to 10th in just over a month.
They won four of their last six games, with two narrow defeats to Manchester City and Liverpool, under Gerrard.
Ahead of the trip to Villa Park, Chelsea captain Azpilicueta was full of praise for Gerrard.
“Since he came in, they got great results and a fresh manager is always a fresh start for the players with new ideas,” the Spain international told the media (via Chelsea’s official website).
“He has showed the manager that he is, setting up a team that is difficult to beat.
“We know what it means playing on Boxing Day. It’s a special day for everybody, so hopefully we can go there and play a good game because we know that we have to show the consistency.
“It will be a tough game, but hopefully we can be at our best and get the three points.”
Unfortunately for Villa, Gerrard has recently tested positive for Covid-19 and will not be able to attend their next two games against Chelsea and Leeds United.
The Blues are dealing with several Covid-19 cases as well with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner, and Callum Hudson-Odoi having to isolate too.
