Chelsea teammate shares 'little message' he sent to Jorginho after Italy's World Cup qualifier exit
Mason Mount shared the message he sent to Chelsea teammate Jorginho after Italy’s defeat to North Macedonia which ended their 2022 World Cup dreams.
Jorginho became the first Chelsea international whose national team fail to qualify for the upcoming World Cup after Italy suffered a shock defeat on Thursday night.
The 30-year-old felt somewhat more responsible than most of his teammates after previously failing to score two penalties that could have secured Italy’s spot in the tournament.
He even said those penalty misses will “haunt” him forever.
Mount, who could empathise with Jorginho, said he sent his club teammate a supportive message.
“I always mention that Jorgi is the joker in the group,” Mount said about the former Napoli man (via Chelsea’s official website) after England’s win over Switzerland.
“But when it comes to big games against us, there is nothing but respect between us all.
“It’s all about respect. If you look at how far both teams [England and Italy] had to come to get that opportunity in the final, it was a massive amount of work.
“So, no, I won’t be giving him jokes or stick about what’s happened with Italy.
“It’s hard for me to see a player I have played with for the last three years go through something like that.
“I actually sent him a little message and said, ‘keep your head up, you’ve had an amazing season, and hopefully we can go on this season to win some more things together’.”
Aside from Jorginho, two other Chelsea players; Edouard Mendy and Christian Pulisic, are also still fighting for World Cup qualification with Senegal and the USMNT, respectively.
