Carney Chukwuemeka claims he was fairly happy with his own Chelsea performance during yesterday’s heavy defeat against Manchester United.
The Blues suffered a 16th Premier League defeat of the season on Thursday night, losing 4-1 at Old Trafford against rivals Man United.
It was yet another very dull 90 minutes for the Chelsea supporters, who will go into Sunday’s final day with very little optimism when they host Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.
However, Frank Lampard’s decision to field several youngsters last night did bring a small amount of joy.
Carney Chukwuemeka, making his 14th Chelsea appearance, was given a rare start yesterday in Manchester.
The 19-year-old midfielder was certainly very busy in the centre of the park and showed some moments of quality.
Speaking after the 4-1 defeat, Chelsea’s caretaker boss Lampard did still find some room to praise Chukwuemeka’s efforts.
The English teenager has followed suit with a self assessment of this week’s display:
“I think I’ve been training well and I thought I did okay out there. I know I can definitely improve further but I want to be playing for Chelsea on a regular basis and getting the chance at Old Trafford is definitely a step in the right direction,” Chukwuemeka said, as quoted by the club’s official website.
Chukwuemeka sounds like a confident youngster that will grow and grow over time.
We think he’s looked the part whenever he’s been given first-team minutes this season, which is why it’s frustrating he’s found it difficult to play regularly.
His midweek performance should definitely be enough for him to keep his starting position against Newcastle this weekend. It would be another opportunity for the £20million rising talent to go express his talent and make a further case for himself.
