Willy Caballero revealed the conversation he had with Edouard Mendy ahead of his exit from Chelsea over the summer.

Speaking to the BBC, Caballero explained his feelings towards Mendy being the best goalkeeper on the planet currently, a claim he has told to the Blues number one in person.

It’s difficult not to put the Senegalese international on top of the gloved protector’s pile.

He is certainly the finest ‘keeper in the Premier League right now, with the statistics to support such a statement.

Seven clean sheets in 11 appearances, with just three goals conceded, is quite a remarkable return from the 29-year-old.

Mendy moving on up

FIFA have recognised his achievements by putting him up for their Goalkeeper of the Year award.

An honour that will surely be landing in Mendy’s trophy cabinet before too long.

“I believe strongly that Ed Mendy is the best goalkeeper [in the world] – last year and at the moment this year he is the best,” admitted Caballero, who shared a dressing room with the former Rennes goalie last season.

“As he arrived last season in training I saw an amazingly talented goalkeeper in terms of power, in terms of speed – he is so fast when diving.

“He has very long arms and everyone wants that as a goalkeeper. He is showing in every single game that he is calm and he is improving with his feet, he is playing very well in the build-up.

“He is winning points for Chelsea – not just last season but this season too. He is enjoying performing at this level and keeping clean sheets.”

“I spoke with him last season and I told him ‘For me you are the best goalkeeper at the moment but you have to keep doing it for longer – next season and next season and next season’.

“‘Because you have only shown for one season what you are able to do’ – and he is doing really well.”

Showing no signs of slowing down

Caballero was released by Chelsea before the start of this campaign, but not before he shared his words of wisdom with Mendy.

Clearly, he has taken the advice on board as he continues to push towards supremacy in his particular field.

It will take some doing to take the title of world’s best from the Blues main shot-stopper.

Only a massive downturn in fortunes would rip away Mendy’s status at the summit.

Based on past evidence, that seems highly unlikely to happen.
