'I would prefer': Kyle Walker admits Chelsea have a player who's better at free-kicks than Phil Foden

Kyle Walker admits Chelsea’s Mason Mount is a better free-kick taker than Manchester City’s Phil Foden, but thinks the latter is more technically gifted.

England have travelled to Qatar this week for the World Cup with a talented squad, which includes both Mount and Foden.

Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate does have an abundance of quality to select from, but it won’t be too big a surprise if both the aforementioned duo start next week’s opening group stage match against Iran.

Mount, 23, is an attacking midfielder that’s one of the best players out of Chelsea’s academy at Cobham.

Similarly, 22-year-old Foden is an attacking midfielder that’s become a huge star since coming from Manchester City’s youth ranks.

Mount better free-kick taker than Foden

Man City defender Walker, who plays with Mount and Foden at international level, is an admirer of both.

He does favour the Chelsea playmaker when it comes to set-pieces, though.

“I think technically, Mason Mount looks good,” Walker said.

When asked if Mount is technically more gifted than Foden, Walker replied: “No.

“A dead-ball situation I would prefer Mase to be on the ball more than Phil.”

Mount has scored six direct free-kicks in his senior career compared to Foden’s zero, so there’s nothing too shocking about Walker’s claim. Click here to watch a video of Foden scoring free-kick goals during Man City training, though.

As for Mount, he scored a sensational free-kick earlier in the season against Aston Villa.

In our view, Foden takes the crown as the most natural talent in the England camp for what he can do with a ball at his feet. There’s a reason he’s become a vital player at the Etihad Stadium under Pep Guardiola.

However, Mount’s individual quality with the ball shouldn’t be overlooked.

Chelsea’s talisman can produce some magical moments in possession. For example, he’s so good at pivoting away from a defender with his first touch.

It’s great news that The Athletic claims this week that Chelsea have made a breakthrough in their contract negotiations with Mount.
