'It was you!': Summer signing says Blues teammate kept 'pestering' him to join Chelsea

Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly shared how Jorginho had been “pestering” him all summer to join him at Stamford Bridge, for which he is now thankful.

The 31-year-old signed a four-year deal with the Blues this summer after spending eight years at Serie A side Napoli.

A number of top clubs tried to sign him during the period, including Barcelona, but in the end, it was Chelsea’s reported £33million offer that convinced him and Napoli — partly.

According to the centre-back himself, Edouard Mendy and, particularly, Jorginho played a big part in his decision to move to west London.

“It was you!” the Senegal international said to Jorginho in an interview (via Chelsea’s official website).

“You’ve been pestering me since June, or maybe March, spamming me with texts, begging me to join the club.

“You helped make it happen.

“I’ve had many conversations with you and Edou and you both had great things to say about the team, the club, and its supporters.

“I don’t know if you remember, [but] before you left Napoli I promised we’d play together again someday.

“So that was definitely one of the season why I made this decision. Knowing I would get to reunite with my brothers and have another chance to play, train and laugh together again definitely helped.

“Plus, when I came to Chelsea in June, in my heart I had already decided I wanted to join.

“I had already been keeping up to date with the team, especially you and Edou, and when I saw you guys winning the Champions League, I felt I was joining the right team at the right moment.

“So, when I landed in London to join you and the rest of the team, I knew I was doing the right thing.”

It is not uncommon for former teammates to play roles in transfers.

A couple of years ago, Antonio Rudiger helped convince fellow former Blue Timo Wener to join Chelsea.
