Nick Pope has picked Raheem Sterling as the most skilful player in the current England squad.

Speaking to talkSPORT, the Newcastle United and Three Lions goalkeeper credited Sterling for possessing the fanciest footwork.

Chelsea’s nifty wide-man certainly has a few moves in his locker to tie up opponents.

According to, he has completed the joint-second most successful dribbles (11) in the Premier League from Graham Potter’s side.

Within an England side that are not exactly known for their flashy flicks and taunting tricks, the Stamford Bridge star probably comes out on top in this department.

“Um, I’d go Raheem Sterling,” replied Pope when asked to name the most skillful Three Lions member.

Skillful Sterling

As much as we enjoy seeing Sterling wrap up defenders with his dancing toes, his statistics should come with a caveat.

Whilst he has managed 11 successful dribbles, the 27-year-old also has 30 unsuccessful attempts in the league this term.

This is unwanted record at Chelsea, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek the next down with 18 failed tries.

Also, Sterling does not necessarily use skills in the form of stepovers and flip-flaps.

He is generally more direct with his attack, a trait he developed under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

During his days at Liverpool, the attacker was much more inclined to attempt something flamboyant rather than straight forward.

It’s certainly not been all sparkle for Sterling since he joined Chelsea in the summer.

Perhaps he needs to reintroduce some skills into his game to relight the flame that’s merely flickered in the last few months.
