'Nothing is finished': Cesar Azpilicueta makes Chelsea claim about PL title race
Cesar Azpilicueta has warned rivals for the Premier League title that “nothing is finished” yet, despite the recent drop of form from Chelsea.
Chelsea, who previously sat top of the league table for several weeks this season, are down in third after a mini dip.
It’s approaching the halfway points of the campaign and Thomas Tuchel’s Blues side are still in the mix as title challengers, albeit their main rivals are extremely strong.
First of all, defending champions Manchester City sit top of the tree at Christmas in fine form. Meanwhile, second-placed Liverpool are just three points further back from them and have a squad used to winning trophies.
Chelsea have a six-point deficit to Man City to try overcome and a lot may be decided in January when they face both the top two.
Incidentally, Paul Merson said this week that he doesn’t think the Blues can afford to lose more than one league game from now until the end of the season to win the top-flight crown.
Club captain Azpilicueta remains confident that his side are still right in the title conversation, though.
“We want to challenge. That takes hard work, determination and going through tough moments and overcoming those tough moments,” Azpilicueta said.
“We are in a worse position than we were a few weeks ago but nothing is finished. We still have time to recover. We have to be solid and consistent. We have to be solid, consistent every day.”
Who’s won league titles in Chelsea squad?
Of course, the majority of this Chelsea squad won the Champions League last year to light up their CVs. However, not all can boast league title medals yet.
Azpilicueta and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have both won two league titles during their time at Stamford Bridge. Marcos Alonso was a part of the group that were successful under Antonio Conte in the 2016/17 season.
Thiago Silva won seven league trophies with ex-club Paris Saint-Germain, along with one at AC Milan. Romelu Lukaku played a massive role in Inter Milan winning Serie A last season, too.
N’Golo Kante has won the Premier League with both Chelsea and Leicester City. Ben Chilwell got a title medal during Leicester’s success as well.
Mateo Kovacic won La Liga with Real Madrid, plus the Croatian league with Dinamo Zagreb three times. Meanwhile, Saul Niguez won La Liga with Atletico Madrid last season.
Finally, Hakim Ziyech once won the Eredivisie with Ajax.
Chelsea’s talented bunch of academy graduates would love to add a league title to their name.
