Olivier Giroud has named Chelsea’s Thiago Silva as one of the best defenders he’s ever played with.

Former Blues striker Giroud, 36, has played alongside some of the world’s elite players during a very successful career for club and country.

Speaking in an interview with CBS Sports, the AC Milan star was tasked with picking a best starting XI from past or presents teammates.

We’re not too surprised to hear Thiago Silva make his final team:

“Thiago Silva, experience. Very clever, intelligent, always well positioned on the pitch,” Giroud said.

There were a couple more Chelsea connections in his fantasy XI, with N’Golo Kante and Antonio Rudiger also named.

Silva is one of the best defensively that Giroud has ever played alongside.

Our guess is that most of the Chelsea centre-back’s old teammates would choose him as well in the same scenario.

At the age of 38, he’s still shining in the Premier League and is one of the standout individuals at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea attacker Joao Felix said this week that Silva is even better than he thought he would be. That goes to show how the experienced centre-half has aged like a fine wine.

Chelsea still rely on Silva as a vital player at the age of 38.

Fortunately, he’s the perfect mentor for the exciting crop of young centre-halves on the club’s books right now.

The likes of Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile should be like a sponge learning from him every day. You should chuck Levi Colwill into the same bracket next season, too.

Silva’s instincts and football brain allows him still to perform at the highest level.
