'Phenomenal again': Christian Pulisic in awe of Chelsea teammate's latest CL display
Christian Pulisic was left in awe of Chelsea teammate N’Golo Kante after his performance on the Champions League stage on Tuesday night.
Chelsea took a step towards the Champions League quarter-finals by beating Lille 2-0 in the home leg of their last-16 tie, so are strong favourites to finish the job out in France for the second leg.
Kai Havertz, along with Pulisic, were the Blues goalscorers in front of the Stamford Bridge crowd.
The reigning Champions League holders did enough to qualify from the group as runners-up behind Juventus, but turned it up a gear as the knockout stages commenced against Lille.
Thomas Tuchel’s side were defensively formidable as usual in Europe, while it was great to see some of the forward players perform with some confidence.
Pulisic was keen to highlight the brilliance of Chelsea’s central midfielder Kante, though.
The 30-year-old covered every blade of grass as the box-to-box midfielder, as well as provide a superb assist that was loved by Frank Leboeuf.
It’s certainly not the first time Kante has bossed proceedings in the Champions League.
“Phenomenal again today,” Pulisic said when discussing Kante.
“Just seems like he never gets tired, just continues to win balls and does so many good things on the field. He’s a great player.”
Another trophy and top four a successful Chelsea season
Of course, it’s a massive disappointment to see the Blues just short of the Premier League’s top two in this year’s title race. There is no shame when you consider the talent of Manchester City and Liverpool, though.
The gap in the league is one Tuchel will need to close moving forward, but staying in the top four and consolidating third in the league should earn the manager a pass mark this season.
It can become an excellent campaign if that’s followed by trophies, too.
Chelsea have won the Club World Cup and Super Cup this season. However, adding either a Carabao Cup, A Cup or Champions League on top of that should be the aim for this squad of players.
