Thomas Muller praises Chelsea ace's performance as striker

Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller was full of praise for fellow Germany international Kai Havertz’s performance as a number nine for Chelsea.

Havertz has recently jumped ahead of Chelsea’s record signing, Romelu Lukaku, in the striking pecking order, thanks to his outstanding goalscoring form.

That’s five goals and an assist in his last six games for the Blues.

It is hardly a surprise that he performed well in this role considering he was also Thomas Tuchel’s first-choice number nine in the second half of last season.

While Havertz himself previously insisted that he did not see himself as a “real number nine”, he also said he preferred to play closer to the opposition goal.

Having started as a centre midfielder at Bayer Leverkusen, he seems to thrive in more advanced positions.

This also seems to be the case in the national team, in which he is ahead of Chelsea teammate Timo Werner for the striker role.

Muller, who clearly knows a thing or two about being a versatile player, has kept an eye on Havertz’s recent displays.

“Kai has played very well at Chelsea, especially up front,” the Bayern Munich forward said about Havertz (via BNN).

“And he has been able to assert himself in the very physical Premier League.

“I’ll say this, you can put Kai up front almost anywhere and always have hope that he’ll make a great play.”

Germany have not really had many elite strikers since Miroslav Klose and Havertz’s form as a false nine may prove crucial to their World Cup campaign.

In addition to that, similar to Tuchel, Hansi Flick tends to opt for a 3-4-3 formation which Havertz should be very familiar with.
