'We all know': Edouard Mendy says every Chelsea player knows how good their 27-year-old teammate is
Edouard Mendy has said every member of the Chelsea squad is fully aware of how good teammate Kepa Arrizabalaga actually is.
Mendy, 29, has been unavailable to Chelsea for the last few weeks due to his participation at the Africa Cup of Nations, which he ended up winning with his country Senegal.
He would be a major loss to most sides across the world, but the Blues have found a brilliant solution.
Chelsea’s second-choice goalkeeper Kepa has done a superb job filling into Mendy’s position in-between the sticks.
27-year-old shot-stopper Kepa has had some turbulent times during his Stamford Bridge career. However, he’s been putting in consistently top performances in the last few games to remind everyone what he can do.
Mendy has been keen to stress that Kepa’s quality is no secret to his Chelsea teammates.
“I think Kepa did a fantastic job when I was at the Africa Cup of Nations, even before. We all know how good he is and this is why you play for Chelsea,” Mendy said.
Huge Chelsea decision
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is in the uncomfortable situation where he’s likely to make one player very upset tomorrow.
Obviously, he can only select one goalkeeper in his starting line-up for Saturday’s Club World Cup final against Palmeiras.
For Kepa, he impressed during the 1-0 semi-final victory against Al Hilal this week. In addition, he’s barely put a glove wrong in his recent appearances with some eye-catching performances.
In contrast, Mendy’s the club’s number one goalkeeper that wants to play in cup finals and win trophies. He’s fresh off the back of helping Senegal win the AFCON tournament on penalties in the final.
It may be a toss of a coin from Tuchel to decide who plays on the weekend, but long-term it’ll be interesting to see if the Blues can keep Kepa happy with his role at the club.
Incidentally, Mateo Kovacic has raved about the club’s goalkeeping department this week.
