West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell has described Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell as “fantastic” despite the fact he misses out on a place in the England squad because of him.

Cresswell, 31, is a West Ham left-back who’s having an outstanding season so far at the London Stadium.

He’s earned three senior England caps in his career, but he’s not been called up to the squad since 2017.

Gareth Southgate’s England currently rely on Manchester United’s Luke Shaw and Chelsea’s Chilwell as their two main options at left-back. Also, the duo can slot in as wing-backs depending on the system.

West Ham star Cresswell has shown great respect to his defensive counterparts by praising both:

“The squad that Gareth Southgate has got – Luke Shaw, Ben Chilwell – fantastic players,” Cresswell said

“If anything was to happen with any of the lads who are in the squad now, I’d like to think I’d have a chance of getting in.”

In fairness, Cresswell has perhaps been a tad unfortunate in the last couple of years not to be in the mix with England at some stage. He’s consistently a 7/10 every game for West Ham, who may be pleased he gets rest during international breaks due to the busy fixture schedules.

Peak Chilwell vital to Chelsea and England

Chilwell deserves every praise thrown his way at the moment given the kind of form he’s in.

The 24-year-old looks back to his very best in the past couple of months and he’s risen to the challenge thrown down by Blues manager Thomas Tuchel to get back in his XI at Stamford Bridge. He’s now pushing Shaw for England’s staring role, too.

Chilwell brings a massive offensive threat with three Premier League goals under his belt already this season.

The English full-back has been praised by both Brendan Rodgers and Ruben Loftus-Cheek this month, as his form continues to get recognition from all over.
