Frank Lampard has ruled out Christian Pulisic for Saturday’s trip to West Brom as he keeps a wary eye on the winger’s fitness.
Having seen what Kai Havertz and Timo Werner can do this season, Chelsea fans are understandably anticipating the potential attacking set-up with the additions of Hakim Ziyech and Pulisic.
The wait is likely to be longer than most would have hoped, though, as Lampard ruled out the pair for the weekend’s Premier League fixture against West Brom.
He told the media at his pre-match press conference (via Football London): “Pulisic and Ziyech aren’t fit, but they are training with us now.”
Ziyech twisted his knee during the pre-season friendly against Brighton on 29 August, while Pulisic suffered a hamstring injury in the FA Cup final on 1 August.
After almost two months of recovery, some fans might start questioning why Pulisic isn’t ready to play yet.
Speaking about Pulisic, Lampard admitted he is being cautious over the American’s fitness issues given his past injury record.
“There are always concerns when there is a history with fitness,” he explained.
“You have to make sure you don’t overcook him.
“There is a fine line, but he is hungry to play. It’s something we have to manage with him.
“We want to get as many minutes of the great Christian we saw last season.”
