Paul Merson praises Thiago Silva's 'absolutely outstanding' display in Burnley win
Paul Merson was full of praise for Thiago Silva after his dominant display at Turf Moor as Chelsea secured another shutout against Burnley.
It is safe to say that Frank Lampard’s decision to leave out Silva from the trip to Krasnodar last Wednesday paid off on Saturday.
The 36-year-old looked fresh at the back, winning nine of his 10 duels both in the air and on the ground.
Not only that; Chelsea kept their fourth consecutive clean-sheet in all competitions and stopped Burnley from having a shot on target throughout the game.
Speaking after the match, Merson was really impressed by the former Brazil international.
He told Sky Sports (via the Metro): “Thiago Silva, you thought [it would be a test for him] today, Burnley away with freezing cold gale-force wind.
“Rolls-Royce. Absolutely outstanding.
“Had both players in his pocket. Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes didn’t go near him in the end – he was that dominant.”
Silva, who wore the captain’s armband in that game, showed his quality as a leader even afterwards as he urged his teammates to shift their focus to the upcoming Champions League group match against Rennes.
He wrote on Instagram: “Congratulations for that great game my Chelsea teammates.
“Time to rest and recover, as we have Champions League [match] on Wednesday.”
