'A handful': Peter Crouch singles out impressive 20-year-old Chelsea loanee after latest display

Peter Crouch has praised Chelsea loanee Armando Broja after his latest performance in a Southampton shirt at the weekend.

Aged 20, Broja is an exciting young talent on Chelsea’s books.

The strong centre-forward was sent on a season-long loan this season to Premier League rivals Southampton, who are starting to get the best out of him. He’s scored seven goals in 21 appearances across all competitions at present for the Saints.

Broja helped his side record an impressive 1-1 draw at home to Manchester City on Saturday in the league. The striker delivered an all-action display to disturb the City defence and even had a brilliant goal ruled out for offside. Incidentally, some Chelsea fans on Twitter were comparing him to Diego Costa at the weekend.

Crouch has spoken highly of the Chelsea loanee in his latest column.

“They (Southampton) always carried that threat going forward and made sure they were affecting the game as high up the pitch as possible. Armando Broja, on loan from Chelsea, is obviously a handful, a brutish striker who can make defenders think. These are the sort of guys needed if you are taking anything off City,” Crouch wrote.

Broja the answer for Chelsea

There are several transfer rumours circling about Broja, but the Chelsea hierarchy need to convince the youngster his future lies at Stamford Bridge.

He’s scheduled to return to the Bridge at the end of the season when his loan at St Mary’s expires.

Blues manager Thomas Tuchel is watching Broja turn in consistent performances at Premier League level each week, which is why he should be eyeing him for his first-team squad next season.

Chelsea frontman Romelu Lukaku definitely needs competition in the number nine positions. It looks like Broja is already at a good enough standard to put pressure on him, too.

There is so much excitement about yet another player who’s played in the club’s academy at Cobham, and it would be a real shame if he was sold.
