'Absolute leadership': Chris Sutton says Chelsea star is only bettered in PL by Liverpool player in his position

Chris Sutton has claimed that Chelsea star Antonio Rudiger is the second best defender in the Premier League at present behind Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk.

Rudiger, 28, will soon bring to an end a stunning calendar year that has seen him perform as well as any centre-back in Europe. The Germany international has been a colossus at Stamford Bridge in 2021 while working with Blues manager Thomas Tuchel, whose switch to a back-three system has been perfect for him.

Rudiger mastered the left-sided centre-back position very quickly and is a nailed-on figure in the Chelsea XI.

Pundit Sutton has paid him a huge compliment by saying 30-year-old Liverpool man Van Dijk is the only centre-half across the Premier League who’s better than him. Also, he advised Chelsea to sort his ongoing contract situation.

“How much would it cost to replace him? On that basis, I think they have to give him the money if he wants that money,” Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport.

RONALDO NEEDS TO STOP WHINING.

“I think he’s a superb defender second to Virgil van Dijk in the Premier League. He has that aggression. I think he’s decent enough on the ball. He’s composed. When you talk about absolute leadership on the pitch, I think he epitomes that. He’s a real driving force.”

Rudiger’s Chelsea future

With the defender’s contract expiring at the end of the season, Blues supporters are understandably panicking that they’re set to lose an elite defender.

Spanish giants Real Madrid are reportedly waiting in the wings to make a swoop for him on a free transfer, as clubs can start negotiating with him in the New Year.

It could prove an impossible task for Chelsea trying to sign a replacement with the same kind of aggression, enthusiasm and authority as Rudiger.

Blues supporters should be praying something can be resolved between the club and player to secure a new contract.

Van Dijk has proven himself invaluable to Liverpool in recent years and Rudiger has brought a similar aura to Chelsea’s backline in 2021.
