'Absolutely brilliant': Glenn Hoddle blown away on commentary by Chelsea star's defending in last night's Lille win

Glenn Hoddle was full of praise last night for Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta during the Champions League win against Lille.

The Blues came from behind on Wednesday night to secure a 2-1 victory away to French opposition Lille.

Azpilicueta’s fortunate goal that deflected in off his knee secured the win on the night, resulting in a convincing 4-1 aggregate success over two legs to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

Azpilicueta, 32, returned to the starting line-up after his recent absence.

The Spaniard impressed in the right wing-back position, something his manager Thomas Tuchel described post-match as not his best role.

Pundit Hoddle was extremely complimentary of the experienced defender during his commentary. In particular, he loved a piece of defending late in the second half where he shielded the ball out of play from Lille attacker Hatem Ben Arfa.

“He has been absolutely brilliant tonight. He has put in a stint down in this right wing-back position. He’s been on the cover early in the game,” Hoddle said in the 80th minute of Chelsea’s win vs Lille during BT Sport 2’s commentary.

“This time he’s one-on-one [against Ben Arfa], his determination. It doesn’t matter what the scoreline is, ‘I’m doing my job’. Great defending.”

Chelsea defence formidable

This Chelsea backline really is quite special.

Yes, they were perhaps a tad fortunate when Lille clattered the woodwork when pushing for a way back into the contest yesterday. They did score from the penalty spot, too.

Overall, the Blues defence were too good over the two legs and set it up for the attackers to win the game.

It’s huge for the team to know they’ve got such huge experience at the back with the likes of Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger and Marcos Alonso.
