'Better than anyone else': Pat Nevin raves about £50m Chelsea star after weekend display

Pat Nevin has raved about Chelsea star Jorginho after his penalty masterclass in the weekend victory at home to Leeds United.

Chelsea returned to winning ways in the Premier League by beating rivals Leeds at Stamford Bridge.

Thomas Tuchel’s side needed two second-half penalties to secure the three points, including one that was dramatically awarded in stoppage time. Jorginho, 29, stepped up on both occasions to beat Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier from 12 yards.

The £50million Italian has now taken 17 spot-kicks during his Premier League career at Chelsea, scoring 15 of them. Incidentally, his only misses came last season during games against Arsenal and Liverpool.

Nevin has hailed Chelsea’s recent match-winner as one of the best around when it comes to the unique style of a slow run-up on penalties.

“First of all, Raphinha showed us his version of a Jorginho special, and to be fair it was much better than a pale imitation. Our number 5 wasn’t to be beaten however as he stepped up, under huge pressure once again, to show everyone how exactly to do the hop, skip and score better than anyone else in the business,” Nevin wrote.

Chelsea still crying out for goal machine

Jorginho’s record from penalties certainly isn’t faultless in recent times for club and country, but he’s the designated taker at the Bridge who’s got confidence in his own ability.

The midfielder’s goals at the weekend were brilliant. It’s slightly frustrating to see him joint-top of the goalscoring charts at Chelsea right now, though.

His six goals in all competitions this season, all of them penalties, means he’s level with teammate Mason Mount for most Blues goals during the campaign so far.

If Tuchel’s side are to compete for trophies across the board, surely they need more output from attackers.

Of course, Chelsea won the Champions League last season by contributions from all over. However, this current group wants to be in the mix for every competition they participate in and they need more from their forwards.

Romelu Lukaku is hopefully the man to solve the Chelsea conundrum.
