'Excellent record': Mark Lawrenson makes prediction for Chelsea vs Plymouth cup tie
Mark Lawrenson has predicted Chelsea to breeze through their FA Cup fourth-round match tomorrow against Plymouth Argyle.
European champions Chelsea host League One opposition Plymouth at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
For the Blues, they’ll be looking for a routine home win to avoid any kind of cup scare. They comfortably dealt with non-league side Chesterfield in the previous round.
Meanwhile, opponents Plymouth are in a decent position sat seventh in League One. Any kind of cup upset tomorrow should only breathe confidence into their league bid for promotion
BBC pundit Lawrenson is predicting a 3-0 victory for the Premier League side at the weekend.
“Plymouth were top of League One in mid-November but have slipped down the table a little bit since losing manager Ryan Lowe to Preston in December,” Lawrenson wrote.
“They can view this game in the same way Middlesbrough might look at their tie at Manchester United – it is exciting and will be an enjoyable day that will be a very useful money-spinner, but promotion takes priority.
“Chelsea will be able to rotate their squad but Thomas Tuchel has an excellent record in the cups and they should win this tie comfortably whatever team he puts out.”
Chelsea have cup specialist
Of course, everyone associated with Chelsea wants the club to be back winning the Premier League crown. Unfortunately, Manchester City look out of sight for them once again this season.
However, they’ve got a manager in Tuchel that’s brilliant in cup competitions.
He won the Champions League last season with the Blues after arriving in January. Also, his team made it to the FA Cup final before losing to Leicester City at Wembley Stadium.
Chelsea are looking forward to a Carabao Cup final against Liverpool at the end of February in another chance to win silverware, so it’s great to see Tuchel pushing this group for more trophies. It’s the bread and butter of any Blues manager to be successful that they must win trophies on a regular basis.
You’d be a brave person to bet against Tuchel taking his side into the latter stages of this year’s FA Cup.
The Chelsea Chronicle has delivered a predicted line-up that could start against Plymouth tomorrow.
