'I suspect Tuchel knows': Carragher makes Chelsea claim when discussing PL title race

Jamie Carragher has suggested that Chelsea are the outsiders in this season’s Premier League title race, claiming they’ll be in a better place to challenge the top two next year.

Chelsea, who currently sit third in the league, are involved in what currently looks like a three-horse race for the title.

The Blues slipped up again on Thursday, though, by drawing 1-1 at home to Everton, which leaves them three points adrift of second-placed Liverpool. In addition, table toppers Manchester City are a point further ahead than Liverpool.

Either Man City or Liverpool has lifted the Premier League in the past four seasons, but Chelsea are the first team in a while that looks like they can genuinely challenge them.

Carragher isn’t completely ruling Chelsea out yet for the league crown. However, he’s said Tuchel’s side are stilla step behind their main rivals and their manager will be aware of that.

“The difficulty for Tuchel is although Chelsea can win it in 2022, they are still 12 months behind Liverpool and Manchester City in their development,” Carragher said.

“Chelsea are getting there – they may do sooner rather than later – but the last few weeks have shown they are not quite at that level yet, failing to kill games when in control. That will come. But given how tight the title race is there is hardly any margin for error, so they need it to happen over the next few weeks because if a four point gap increases to six and then eight, it is difficult to see City and Liverpool making so many mistakes to allow Chelsea back.

“I suspect Tuchel knows Chelsea have always been the outsiders of the three title challengers, and that his side will be in a stronger position to win it next season. For Chelsea to win, City would have to lose form and Liverpool fail to rediscover that which won them the 2020 title. So far, it has been business as usual for Guardiola and Klopp. Barring an injury crisis, that will not change.”

Can Chelsea stay in runaway pack?

For Chelsea, the aim has to be to try stick with Man City and Liverpool for as long as possible this season.

The division’s top three have made a breakaway from the rest of the teams in the league, but Blues supporters will be worried about the sides below catching up if the inconsistent form continues.

Tuchel’s side start the 2022 calendar year in the league by facing the top two and their fate will be a lot clearer after that.

The immediate focus needs to be on the upcoming league games against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Aston Villa and Brighton, though.

Any Blues fans disappointed with results right now should look at how far this group has progressed in 2021 with Tuchel at the helm.
